Product Title Checker

One title, every marketplace's rules at once — with the problems marked on the words themselves, so you can see exactly what to change.

Title length by marketplace

Every marketplace counts differently, and the hard limit is rarely the number that matters — titles get visually truncated long before they get rejected.

MarketplaceHard limitDisplays fully up toNotes
Amazon 200 80 Many categories enforce 80 or fewer; over-length titles get suppressed from search.
eBay 80
Etsy 140
Google Shopping 150 70 Truncated in ads beyond ~70.
Walmart 200 75
Shopify (SEO title) 70 Google truncates page titles around 60–70 characters.

Limits collected 2026-08-22 and shown as a guide. Marketplaces change them, and Amazon in particular enforces stricter limits in many categories — confirm in your seller dashboard.

The characters you cannot see

Titles copied from supplier spreadsheets and translation tools carry passengers: zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, full-width Latin letters that look identical to normal ones, and leftover CJK punctuation. They are invisible in your editor but stored in the listing, where they break exact-match search and stop your own SKU lookups from matching. This checker shows them as so you can find them.

Why ALL CAPS gets listings suppressed

Marketplace style guides prohibit gratuitous capitalisation, and enforcement is automated. Acronyms are fine — USB, LED, XL — which is why this tool only flags capitalised words longer than three letters rather than shouting about every capital.

Every check this tool runs (16 rules)

Length

TTL-L01 Over the marketplace title limit

The title exceeds the maximum length for at least one selected marketplace. Over-length titles are rejected or suppressed from search results rather than simply trimmed.

Fix: Put the words buyers search for first, then cut from the end: redundant adjectives, repeated brand mentions, and packaging trivia.

TTL-L02 Longer than the recommended display length

The title fits the hard limit but exceeds the length that actually displays in search results — the tail gets cut mid-phrase on mobile.

Fix: Front-load the essentials: brand, product type, the one attribute that differentiates it.

TTL-L03 Very short title

Under 20 characters gives search engines almost nothing to match against. Titles this short usually omit the product type or key attributes buyers type.

Fix: Add the product type and one or two defining attributes (size, material, quantity).

Capitalisation & typography

TTL-C01 ALL CAPS words

Gratuitous capitalisation is prohibited by most marketplace style guides and is a frequent cause of listing suppression. Acronyms (USB, LED, XL) and single letters are fine.

Fix: Use title case: capitalise the first letter of each significant word.

TTL-C02 Title is entirely lowercase

An all-lowercase title reads as unfinished data rather than a product name, and some marketplaces normalise it inconsistently across surfaces.

Fix: Use title case.

TTL-C03 Repeated punctuation or decorative separators

Runs like "!!!", "***", "~~~" or "|||" are treated as promotional decoration. They consume length, are not searched for, and violate style guides.

Fix: Use a single separator (a comma or a hyphen) between phrases.

Characters

TTL-X01 Emoji or pictographic characters

Emoji are not permitted in marketplace titles. They also cost 4 bytes each and are never typed by buyers in search.

Fix: Remove the emoji.

TTL-X02 Trademark or copyright symbols

Most style guides prohibit ™, ® and © in titles — they are not searchable and cause rejections on several marketplaces.

Fix: Remove the symbol; the brand name alone is sufficient.

TTL-X03 Invisible or zero-width characters

Zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces and BOM markers are invisible in your editor but become part of the stored title, breaking exact-match lookups and sometimes word splitting.

Fix: Retype the affected part of the title.

TTL-X04 Full-width characters

Full-width Latin letters and digits (ABC, 123) arrive from CJK input methods. They look almost identical to normal characters but never match what buyers type.

Fix: Convert them to standard half-width characters.

TTL-X05 Characters from another writing system

CJK, Cyrillic, Arabic or other non-Latin characters in a title meant for an English-language marketplace are almost always leftovers from translation or a supplier spreadsheet — including the CJK comma "," and full-width brackets.

Fix: Replace them with their English equivalents.

Wording & content

TTL-W01 Promotional or pricing text

Titles must describe the product, not the offer. "Free shipping", "sale", "best price", "% off", "hot deal" and similar phrasing are prohibited across marketplaces and are a common suppression trigger.

Fix: Move promotional messaging into a promotion or the description.

TTL-W02 Subjective claim

Subjective superlatives ("best", "amazing", "perfect", "#1") carry no search value and are prohibited by most style guides. Buyers search for attributes, not adjectives.

Fix: Replace with a concrete attribute: material, capacity, compatibility, certification.

TTL-W03 Repeated word

A word repeated in the title wastes length without improving matching — marketplaces index each word once.

Fix: Remove the repetition and spend the characters on an attribute you have not mentioned yet.

Source: Amazon Seller Central Help → "Product title requirements" and the category style guides (the Seller Central help centre requires a seller login, so we name the source instead of linking to a page that would show you the homepage).

TTL-W04 Contact details or external links

Phone numbers, email addresses and URLs in a title violate every marketplace policy and can lead to account-level enforcement, not just a rejected listing.

Fix: Remove them entirely.

TTL-W05 Placeholder or template text

The title contains leftover template content ("{{product_name}}", "TBD", "N/A", "test", "lorem ipsum"). These reach live listings surprisingly often.

Fix: Replace with the real product title.
