Nordic Payment Reference Checker

Check a domestic Finnish reference number (viitenumero) or Swedish Bankgiro OCR reference. Evaluates both national standards simultaneously, shows calculated check digits, and derives the international ISO 11649 RF equivalent.

Where Nordic payment reference rules come from

In Finland and Sweden, domestic bank transfers and invoice reconciliation rely on national structured reference numbers. These predate SEPA and are still actively supported and required by domestic banking infrastructure alongside international ISO 11649 RF references.

Finland: kotimainen viitenumero (Finanssiala ry)

The Finnish domestic reference standard is defined by Finanssiala ry (the Federation of Finnish Financial Services) in Kotimaisen viitenumeron rakenneohje. It consists of 4 to 20 digits. The check digit is calculated using repeating weights of 7, 3, 1 from right to left, subtracting the sum from the next multiple of 10. For human presentation, the number is grouped into blocks of 5 digits from right to left (e.g. 12 34561).

Sweden: Bankgiro OCR-referensnummer (Bankgirot)

The Swedish domestic reference standard is governed by Bankgirot in Bankgiro Inbetalningar Användarmanual §5.2. Length ranges from 2 to 25 digits. Bankgirot defines two primary verification models: Modell 1 (standard Luhn Modulo 10 check digit) and Modell 2 (variable length check, where the second-to-last digit indicates the total length modulo 10 and the final digit is the Luhn check digit over the entire string).

Why this tool checks both without guessing

Domestic Nordic payment references contain only numeric digits and no country prefix. Rather than forcing users to pick a country dropdown or making assumptions, this tool runs both validation algorithms concurrently. If a number satisfies both standards (for instance, short numbers where both algorithms produce the same digit), both interpretations and their respective international RF formats are displayed.

Cross-border bridge: converting to ISO 11649 RF

When paying a Nordic supplier from outside the Nordics via SEPA, foreign banks often reject domestic viitenumero or Bankgiro OCR numbers in the remittance information. Prepending RF with two ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 check digits turns the domestic reference into a globally recognized ISO 11649 Structured Creditor Reference.

Every check this tool runs (8 rules)

NPR-N01 A valid reference is not a settled payment

The check digit proves the reference is internally consistent — that it was typed or copied without a transposition or slip. It does not prove the reference exists in a creditor’s ledger or that an invoice has been paid. It is a structural check, not a bank database lookup.

Source: Nordic domestic reference numbers are structural standards (Finanssiala ry for Finland, Bankgirot for Sweden). Validation proves mathematical consistency, not accounting status.

NPR-F01 Only digits and formatting spaces are permitted

Nordic payment reference numbers consist solely of numeric digits. Alphabetic characters, punctuation, or special symbols are not allowed in Finnish viitenumero or Swedish Bankgiro OCR references.

Fix: Remove non-numeric characters and verify the digits against the invoice.

Source: Both Finanssiala ry and Bankgirot specify strictly numeric reference strings.

NPR-L01 Reference length is outside Nordic limits

A Finnish viitenumero requires 4 to 20 digits (3 to 19 base digits plus 1 check digit). A Swedish Bankgiro OCR reference requires 2 to 25 digits. A reference outside 2 to 25 digits cannot be valid under either Nordic standard.

Fix: Ensure the reference has between 4 and 20 digits for Finland, or between 2 and 25 digits for Sweden.

Source: Finanssiala ry specifies 4–20 digits; Bankgirot Inbetalningar §5.2 specifies 2–25 digits.

NPR-FI-V01 Valid Finnish reference number (viitenumero)

The reference satisfies the Finanssiala ry domestic reference standard with a 7-3-1 weighted check digit (Kotimaisen viitenumeron rakenneohje).

NPR-SE-V01 Valid Swedish Bankgiro OCR reference (Model 2)

The reference satisfies Bankgirot Inbetalningar §5.2 Model 2 with a matching length check digit and Modulo 10 check digit.

NPR-SE-V02 Valid Swedish Bankgiro OCR reference (Model 1)

The reference satisfies Bankgirot Inbetalningar §5.2 Model 1 with a matching Modulo 10 check digit.

NPR-FI-Z01 Leading zeros in Finnish reference number

The Finanssiala ry specification notes that domestic reference numbers should not include leading zeros in their base part. While the check digit may compute correctly, banking software may reject or strip leading zeros.

Fix: Remove leading zeros from the reference number base.

NPR-C01 Check digit mismatch under Nordic reference systems

The reference does not match the check digit requirements of either Finnish viitenumero (7-3-1 weighting) or Swedish Bankgiro OCR (Luhn Mod-10). One or more digits were likely mistyped or transposed.

Fix: Double-check the digits against the invoice or remittance advice.

Source: Evaluated against both Finanssiala ry (7-3-1) and Bankgirot §5.2 (Luhn Mod-10).
